The light’s changing, the mornings are cooler, and OC lawns are finally exhaling after a long, hot summer. This is my favorite time of year on the route — the yards start bouncing back, and it’s the perfect moment for a reset. Here’s how to send summer off right.
🌱 Season’s Yard Tip: Now’s the time to repair summer damage
Early fall is prime season to fix what the heat did to your lawn. A few high-impact moves: rake out the dead thatch and any lingering brown patches so new growth can breathe; overseed and lightly fertilize (cooler soil that’s still warm from summer is ideal for germination, and cool-season grasses take off now); treat the “pee spots” with an enzyme cleaner and a good soak before you reseed those areas; and deep-clean the whole yard of accumulated waste. Months of summer buildup can leave residue and odor even after visible cleanup — a thorough scoop-and-rinse gives your grass a real fresh start. Set it up right this month and your lawn heads into fall thicker and healthier than it left spring.
🐾 Pup Health Corner: Don’t drop your guard yet
Fall in Orange County has a habit of throwing one more heat wave — sometimes our hottest days land in September and October thanks to Santa Ana winds. Keep the hot-weather habits going a while longer: morning and evening walks, the 7-second paw test, water in the yard at all times. Two seasonal add-ons worth a note: foxtails and dry brush are still a hazard until the first real rains, so keep up the after-walk checks; and as we get the occasional wind event, make sure gates and fences are secure so a spooked dog can’t slip out. (We check the gate latch every single visit, but a quick look on your end never hurts.)
📍 Around OC: Perfect patio weather is back
The best dog-outing weather of the year is right around the corner. As the crowds thin and temps drop, it’s a great time to revisit the spots that were too hot at midday all summer — a leashed evening stroll through Laguna’s beaches (rules ease up after September 10), a cooled-off afternoon at Irvine Central Bark, or a relaxed patio hang at a dog-friendly brewery in Costa Mesa. Check your city’s site for fall farmers markets and community events too — many welcome leashed, well-behaved dogs and make for an easy weekend outing.

Rocky is a boxer with, per his humans, “more energy in September than he had all summer.” Now that it’s cooler he’s back to two walks a day and full-speed backyard sprints — which is a lot easier to enjoy on a freshly reset, clean lawn. Run it, Rocky. 🧡
